Articles @ Long Grove Web>> Search Engine Tips from the Experts
Here are some tips from the experts at a recent trade show, PubCon 2007 in Las Vegas. Some may seem a little technical, but your Web designer will be hurting your listings by not following these rules:
- Each page of your site is an entry point, optimize title tags and keyphrases for what each page targets.
- Strive for quality links over quantity links.
- If you are targeting your site geographically, get links from local entities (Chamber of Commerce, local directories).
- Don't bother with link exchanges - the linking page's lack of relevance makes it useless for search engine positioning.
- Unique content is important. One thing it can become is "link bait," reasons for other sites with similar content to link to you.
- Google's business center offers free listings that appear in their maps area when your geographical location is selected. These links can help with the search listings.
- JavaScript menus are a red flag to ranking algorithms and shouldn't be used.
- Template-based sites may not rank well because they appear alike to the search engine crawlers.
- If your site sells manufactured products, don't use manufacturer copy... use your own descriptions instead.
- Don't use page redirects (e.g. a page has certain content that appears relevant to the search engine but when the visitor lands there he is redirected to another page with your regular content).
- Blog about your product or target area, this provide so much of the original content the search engines are looking for.
